Sie wurde international bekannt als Verfasserin historischer Kriminalromane, die im viktorianischen England spielen. Ihre Bücher wurden weltweit bisher 25 Millionen Mal verkauft. Her first novel, The Cater Street Hangman, was published in 1979. She went on to write a string of novels across multiple series, which collectively sold 25 million copies around the world.

Perry’s biographer, Joanne Drayton, said the trial sparked salacious interest. "The matricide, the betrayal of a daughter by a mother, the lesbianism – homophobia was rife and undoubtedly in the mix – it was looked at with horror and a degree of repugnance," the news website Stuff quoted her as saying.
