ZUM TOD DES IRISCHEN MUSIKERS, SÄNGERS UND SONGWRITERS SHANE MACGOWAN (THE POGUES)
30.11.2023 Der am 25. Dezember 1957 in Tunbridge Wells (Kent, England) geborene irische Sänger, Musiker und Songwriter Shane Patrick Lysaght MacGowan (Bild) ist am 30. November 2023 gestorben. (*)

Death of Fairytale of New York singer Shane MacGowan
After opening for The Clash on their 1984 tour, The Pogues rose to prominence with hits such as Dark Streets of London, a cover of Waxies’ Dargle and Boys from the County Hell. Their second album, Rum Sodomy & the Lash, produced by Elvis Costello, saw them move away from covers towards more originals, showcasing MacGowan’s obvious songwriting talents through songs like The Old Main Drag.
They grew in popularity over the next 10 years, releasing popular singles such as The Irish Rover with The Dubliners, and a cover of Ewan MacColl’s Dirty Old Town.
Their third album, If I Should Fall from Grace with God, featured one of their biggest hits, the duet Fairytale of New York alongside Kirsty MacColl, who died aged 41 in 2000 in a jet-ski incident.
Released in 1987, the single hit number one in the Irish charts over Christmas that year and number two in the UK. It would become a Christmas perennial across Ireland and the UK.

Shane MacGowan obituary
With his broken teeth and large ears, Shane MacGowan, who has died aged 65, might have seemed the most unlikely frontman for a pop group. But the Pogues never set out to become teen idols. They grafted punk style and attitude on to the raucous end of Irish folk music, as typified by their heroes the Dubliners, and Shane, in particular, gave the band a reputation for drunkenness.
Just like the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, who revolutionised Irish folk music from the distance of the New York diaspora, the first-generation, London-based Irish community spawned the Pogues. Indeed, MacGowan astutely observed that the band could not have originated in Ireland.
The key to the Pogues’ success was the songwriting of MacGowan, in such masterpieces as Streams of Whiskey and A Rainy Night in Soho, but above all in Fairytale of New York, on which he duetted with Kirsty MacColl.

Fairytale of New York: Shane MacGowan, music and excess’
The Pogues were once described as a tight, professional bunch of musicians fronted by a total shambles.
But the shambles, their charismatic singer Shane MacGowan, was heralded as one of the finest song writers and lyricists of his time.
The Pogues' great achievement was to successfully bring together traditional foot-stomping Irish music with the crashing chords of North London punk.
Like fellow Celts Brendan Behan and Dylan Thomas, MacGowan's source of inspiration was invariably alcoholic and he became as famous for his legendary excesses as he was for his music.

A life too interesting
The songs of The Pogues are what happens when rural folk songs are hit over the head by the amphetamine punk spirit of 70s London.
But they are more than that. These "gutter hymns" of the Irish abroad are celebrations of tough lives that are sprinkled with wit, literary references and simple truth telling.
Shane MacGowan once said: "I couldn't believe that nobody else were doing it, so we went on doing it ourselves…"

Shane MacGowan’s Most Memorable Musical Moments, From the Pogues to His Signature Duets
Regarded for his wrenching, joyful lyricism as a bard of all things Irish, Shane MacGowan – the singer-songwriter known mostly for his work as frontman of the Celtic punk phenomenon the Pogues – was truly a tender poet of universal concern. Social blight, childhood dreams, national pride, coy romanticism, bloody Anglo-Irish politics, painful histories, the glee we get from raising a pint or 12: this is the stuff of MacGown’s finest songs, whether with the Pogues, his solo work or in collaboration with fellow punk poets Nick Cave, Joe Strummer and most famously, Kirsty MacColl.

Aus irischer Sicht kann man 2023 wohl leider die Überschrift "The year the music died" geben.
