Seine grossen Erfolge feierte er zwischen 1959 und der Mitte der 1960er-Jahre mit Hits wie "Kissing Time", "Wild One", "Swingin’ School", "Volare", "Sway", "Jingle Bell Rock", "The Cha-Cha-Cha" und "Forget Him". "Durch kleinere Auftritte als Schauspieler im Fernsehen ('Combat') und in Filmmusicals wie 'Bye Bye Birdie' und 'That Lady From Peking' wurde Rydell endgültig zum Star und Frauenschwarm."*

Kurz darauf folgte sein erster Hit "Kissing Time", mit dem er mehrere Wochen in den US-Charts landete. Rydell wurde damit im Alter von 17 Jahren zu einem Star, sein Foto erschien auf den Covern von Teenagermagazinen.
