Né en 1926 à Chicago (États-Unis), d'un père journaliste, participant à la publication d'une revue du Parti communiste des Etats-Unis d'Amérique, et d'une mère juive, Hilary Putnam éduqué en laïque, vit en France avec ses parents jusqu'en 1934, avant de retourner à Philadelphie, où il se consacre à l'étude des mathématiques et de la philosophie.
