26.06.2018 Der am 29. November 1930 in Randfontein geborene südafrikanische Fotograf David Goldblatt ist am 25. Juni 2018 in Johannesburg gestorben. Er zählte zu den wichtigsten Chronisten der Apartheid in Südafrika und war ein international geachteter Bildkünstler.
Few photographers can say they shaped the world's perception of an era, but this is something to which David Goldblatt, who died today at 87 at his home in Johannesburg, could lay claim. His tightly composed photographs, many of them shot in black-and-white, stand today as some of the most compelling and disturbing documents of Apartheid in South Africa. They cemented his reputation as one of the most important documentary photographers of all time, and as one of the most important artists to hail from Africa.

Ramaphosa mourns death of famous photographer Goldblatt
President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his deep sadness on the passing of renowned photographer and recipient of the National Order of Ikhamanga, David Goldblatt on Monday.
Goldblatt passed on at the age of 88, and was one of South Africa's most celebrated photographers. He was also an internationally acclaimed documentary photographer.

A l'occasion de sa rétrospective au Centre Pompidou à Paris (entre février et mai 2018), il avait donné en mars dernier une interview à Libération dans laquelle il déclarait notamment: «Je ne parle que de ce que je connais et, pour être franc, me contrefiche de la manière dont mon parcours est perçu par le public étranger, que je ne cherche aucunement à prendre par la main.»

"Die Apartheid war eine tägliche Schinderei"
Als Fotograf dokumentierte der Südafrikaner David Goldblatt seit 1948 den Alltag seiner Landsleute und zeichnete damit ein differenziertes Bild der rassistischen Gesellschaft. Ab 1989 setzte er sich für die Ausbildung von Minderheiten in seiner Heimat Südafrika ein und gründete die Fotografie-Lehrstätte Market Photography Workshop für Angehörige diskriminierter sozialer Gruppen.
Für Liza Essers, die Direktorin der Goodman Gallery, die den südafrikanischen Fotografen seit Jahrzehnten vertrat, war er "eine Legende, ein Lehrer, eine nationale Ikone und ein Mann mit absoluter Integrität".

Die stille Oberfläche des Landes
Die Mission des Fotografen David Goldblatt war es, Dingen die Ehre zu erweisen, «die übersehen wurden».
In einem seiner letzten Interviews sagte Goldblatt im vergangenen Sommer: «Wir dürfen nie vergessen, dass der Preis für die Freiheit sehr hoch ist und dass man immer, immer an dieser Freiheit festhalten muss. Du darfst nicht nicht hinschauen, du musst immer weiter hinsehen, denn sonst kommt die Fäulnis angekrochen.»
