Gambon galt weithin als einer der renommiertesten Bühnendarsteller der britischen Inseln in seiner Generation. Bei Film und Fernsehen spielte er zahlreiche Charakterrollen und erreichte vor allem als Albus Dumbledore in der Harry-Potter-Filmreihe weltweite Bekanntheit. (*)

Der Name dieses weisen, mächtigen, furchtlosen und warmherzigen Zauberers bedeutet im Neuenglischen "Hummel". Autorin Joanne K. Rowling hat einmal verraten, dass sie sich Dumbledore in Hogwarts summend herumschwirrend vorgestellt habe. Mit langem Bart, grauen Haaren und sanftem Blick brachte Gambon das auf die Leinwand. Ein Zauber, der bleibt.
