05.04.2022 John Zaritsky (Bild), der 1943 in St.Catharines (Ontario) geborene kanadische Regisseur und Produzent von Dokumentarfilmen, ist am 30. März 2022 in Vancouver gestorben. Für seine erste Regiearbeit "Just Another Missing Kid", bei der er auch als Produzent wirkte, erhielt er 1983 den Oscar. Drei Jahre später empfing er für "Tears Are Not Enough" den Genie Award, den wichtigsten Filmpreis Kanadas. Zwischen 2005 und 2008 war er drei Mal für den Gemini Award nominiert, dabei konnte er den Preis zwei Mal einheimsen. Sein Dokumentarfilm "Right to Die?", der die aktive Sterbehilfe zum Thema hat, sorgte 2008 für weltweites Aufsehen.*

The filmmaker was known to take very complex subjects and characters and turn them into compelling and award-winning stories.

He won the 1982 Academy Award for his documentary Just Another Missing Kid, that originally aired on the Canadian TV show the Fifth Estate. That accolade sits alongside more than 40 industry and major film festival awards, including seven Gemini Awards, a Hot Docs Special Jury Award, Cable Ace Award, Whistler Film Festival Lifetime Achievement Award, and several Emmy and additional Gemini nominations. His work has been broadcast in 35 countries and screened at more than 40 film festivals around the world, including Sundance, TIFF, VIFF, Hot Docs and South by Southwest.
