Golan, der anfangs unter Roger Corman als Regie-Assistent gearbeitet hatte und bei vielen Filmen selbst Regie führte, hegte auch künstlerische Ambitionen. 1987 drehte Jean-Luc Godard bei ihm seinen «King Lear» nach Shakespeare, 1986 verfilmte Franco Zeffirelli bei ihm die Verdi-Oper «Otello».
