DER BRITISCHE FILMEMACHER MIKE HODGES IST GESTORBEN

22.12.2022 Der am 29. Juli 1932 in Bristol geborene britische Regisseur und Drehbuchautor Mike Hodges (Bild) ist am 17. Dezember 2022 in Dorset gestorben. 1971 gelang ihm mit "Get Carter" ("Jack rechnet ab") der Durchbruch als Filmregisseur. Die Hauptrolle spielte Michael Caine, mit dem Hodges 1972 auch "Pulp" ("Malta sehen und sterben") drehte. Zu Hodges' bekanntesten Filmen gehört "Flash Gordon" aus dem Jahre 1980. 1994 verfasste er das Drehbuch für den Film "Experiment des Grauens" u. a. mit Donald Sutherland in der Hauptrolle. Hodges war auch als Regisseur von Musikvideos für die Band Queen aktiv.

Hodges' film credits include Croupier, The Terminal Man and 2003's I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, his final feature film.

Brian Blessed, who starred in Flash Gordon, paid tribute, praising Hodges for his "powerful personality" and "brilliant imagination". Speaking to BBC Radio 4's World At One programme, Blessed said of Hodges: "(Flash Gordon) is the only film, apart from Henry V with Kenneth Branagh, that I raced to the studio to start filming.

"Hodges (had a) brilliant imagination, but his direction - mind-blowing. Great manner, great perception. The film was a breath of fresh air."

Earlier this year, the film-maker Mike Hodges wrote a wonderful letter to this newspaper, in answer to the question I had posed in an article about his British mobster movie from 1971: "Even after 50 years, do we properly get Carter?" Hodges laid it bare: we will get Carter if we get that it’s a Hogarthian polemic about the British class system with all its shame and self-hate.

"Flash Gordon"-Regisseur wurde 90 Jahre alt

Mike Hodges wurde 1932 im südenglischen Bristol geboren. Schon Anfang der Fünfzigerjahre kam er zum Fernsehen und erklomm die Karriereleiter Stufe für Stufe. Angefangen als Teleprompter-Bediener arbeitete er sich bis zum Regisseur hoch, wie "Rolling Stone" berichtete. 1969 war mit "Suspect" sein erster Fernsehspielfilm auf der Insel im Fernsehen zu sehen. Zwei Jahre später drehte er "Get Carter" und arbeitete anschließend in den USA.
