MAD Magazine mourns the loss of the incomparable Al Jaffee, creator of the MAD Fold-In, “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions,” and many other MAD features through the decades

A humble and kind creator, Al’s presence, his astute social commentary, and his endless amusement at life’s ups and downs shaped the fabric of the magazine.

Al Jaffee, Inventive Cartoonist at Mad Magazine, Dies at 102

For 55 years he created the fold-in (as opposed to, say, Playboy’s fold-out), giving readers a satirical double-take on whatever was going on in the news or elsewhere.

His early Mad contributions were as a writer, though he was honing his illustrating skills in other projects, like “Tall Tales,” a syndicated comic strip he drew from 1957 to 1963. Eventually Mad made him a writer-artist, and with the fold-in and “Snappy Answers” (a feature that first appeared in October 1965) he became one of the stable of regulars who set Mad’s style.

Al Jaffee Dies: Mad Magazine Cartoonist Who Created Enduring “Fold-In” Feature Was 102

Asked how long he intended to keep illustrating, he said, “I feel that as long as the gray matter in my dome is moving around correctly, I’m going to keep working.” In 2016 he was recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest-working cartoonist in comics history.

Tributes on social media quickly followed news of his death, with comedian, actor and podcaster Marc Maron calling Jaffee a “profound influence” and “one of the greats,” and Portlandia producer Dan Pasternack saying, “The humor of several generations was shaped by his work.”

Former Mad art director Sam Viviano said in the magazine's tribute on Monday that the cartoonist was revered and respected

"It was an event when Al would visit the Mad offices to drop off a Fold-In," Viviano said. "The entire staff would gather for an hour just to listen to him talk about his amazing life and career."

Suzy Hutchinson, Mad's current art director, added: "Al embodied the true spirit of Mad, and so many humorists, cartoonists and creatives will find inspiration in his work for generations to come."

"He was a national treasure, and it was an honor to work with and learn from such an ingenious, caring, and wholly creative soul, the best of the Original Gang of Idiots."

Iconoclastic cartooning legend

Jaffee had a taste for the subversive that made him a natural for Mad, and his style of artwork — clean lines with a flair for the bizarre, off-beat and grotesque — became synonymous with the magazine. He also wrote for Mad, including a regular feature called “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions.”

Pioneering Mad Magazine Cartoonist

In the 2013 book “Inside Mad,” fellow Mad magazine writer Desmond Devlin called Jaffee “the irreplaceable embodiment of Mad Magazine’s range: smart but silly, angry but understanding, sophisticated but gross, upbeat but hopeless. He’s uncommonly interested in figuring out how things work, and exasperated because things never work.”

Jaffee was widely lauded for his work over the years

Jaffee threw himself into art, earning a spot in the inaugural class at New York City’s High School of Music and Art (two of his classmates, William Gaines and Harvey Kurtzman, would later found Mad). As a professional artist, Jaffe’s knack for parody and satire was apparent from one of his earliest characters: Inferior Man, an obvious spoof of caped crusaders, who easily caved at the pressure of fighting crime. Inferior Man was purchased by comics giant Will Eisner, and Jaffee later spent some time working for another luminary, Stan Lee.

The Guinness record-holder for longest career in cartooning, Jaffee was known for inventing several of Mad’s most famous regulars, including Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions and the magazine’s iconic “fold-in”

Speaking to the Guardian in 2016 at the age of 95, Jaffee said he believed satire was becoming harder in the face of politicians who felt no shame about lying. “I think they’re defeating Mad, because they’re going beyond anything we can think of doing to show the clownish nature of their claims,” he said. “It used to be that politicians claimed that they would make jobs for everybody in the country within two years or something like that; now they claim that they’re going to make jobs for everybody on Mars.”
