Though he lived more than half his life in Italy, Jeffrey Smart was regarded as one of Australia's greatest artists. Drawn to urban landscapes as a child, he later told The Sydney Morning Herald that by his early 20s he knew he had "painted my last billabong scene", preferring "urban life, factories, trucks and vacant city lots".
Smart's final painting, of a labyrinth, was finished in 2011 and has not yet been sold. It is one of very few fresh artworks available. The artist was meticulous about only releasing paintings he was pleased with.
Smart's most famous painting, depicting a one-armed man standing beside Sydney's Cahill Expressway, is not on display at Melbourne's National Gallery of Victoria because of gallery repairs, but a less famous work, Rooftops, is in the Ian Potter Centre.
