James Rosenquist, Pop Art Pioneer, Dies at 83
Like his contemporaries Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, Mr. Rosenquist developed a powerful graphic style in the early 1960s that traditionalists reviled and a broad public enthusiastically embraced.
The Pop artists took for their subject matter images and objects from the mass media and popular culture, including advertising, comic books and consumer products.

About the label of "pop art", he wrote that he had "never cared for the term" but was "resigned to it". He also sought to distinguish his work from that of Warhol and Lichtenstein, writing: "I was never concerned with logos or brand names or movie stars, like Andy, for instance. Unlike Roy, I wasn't interested in ironic simulations of pop media; I wanted to make mysterious pictures."

Zusammen mit Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein und Jasper Johns machte James Rosenquist die Pop Art berühmt. Typisch für ihn waren seine riesigen, zum Teil raumfüllenden Malereien.

Sein früher Ausflug in die Werbegrafik gab James Rosenquist ein gutes Rüstzeug an die Hand. Er wurde zu einem Pionier der Pop-Art, dessen kritisch-experimentierlustiger Geist auch im Alter wach blieb.
