31.07.2022 Der am 26. Juli 1919 in Letchworth Garden City (Hertfordshire, England) geborene unabhängige britische Wissenschaftler, Erfinder, Denker und Umweltschützer James Lovelock (Bild) ist am 26. Juli 2022 in Abbotsbury (Dorset, England) gestorben. Er verfügte über Universitätsabschlüsse in Chemie, Medizin und Biophysik. Als Autor zahlreicher populärwissenschaftlicher Bücher und Beiträge zum Thema Umwelt und Zukunft der Menschheit galt er als einflussreicher Vordenker der Ökologiebewegung. Durch die Erfindung des Elektroneneinfangdetektors und seine Messungen zur Verbreitung von FCKW in der Erdatmosphäre 1971 leistete er einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Entdeckung des Ozonlochs. Einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit wurde Lovelock ab Mitte der 1970er-Jahre bekannt, als er zusammen mit Lynn Margulis die Gaia-Hypothese zur Physiologie der Erde entwickelte. Mit seiner These, dass die massive Nutzung der Kernkraft gegenüber der massiven Nutzung fossiler Brennstoffe das kleinere Übel sei, da nur so die verheerenden Folgen des Klimawandels abgemildert werden könnten, stiess er viele UmweltaktivistInnen vor den Kopf. James Lovelock, creator of Gaia hypothesis, dies on 103rd birthday

Lovelock, who was one of the UK’s most respected independent scientists, had been in good health until six months ago, when he had a bad fall.

Known as something of a maverick, he had been dispensing predictions from his one-man laboratory since the mid-1960s, and in his old age he continued to work.

His Gaia hypothesis posits that life on Earth is a self-regulating community of organisms interacting with each other and their surroundings. He said two years ago that the biosphere was in the last 1% of its life.

James Lovelock: Influential green thinker dies aged 103

His 1960s Gaia theory found that Earth, from rocks to air, was one huge interconnected and self-regulating system.

His work formed the basis of much of climate science. And he had warned climate change could be a tipping point for the planet.

But his support for nuclear energy and for fracking attracted criticism from other environmentalists.

Working for Nasa in the 1960s, Lovelock had what he called a Eureka moment when he realised living things had a profound impact on the environment around them. This led to the radical idea everything on Earth, from oceans to every living organism, was a living, connected system.

Lovelock, who was born in England's Letchworth Garden City, has made many contributions to the scientific community, including the highly influential Gaia theory, which considers the Earth as a model in which its living and nonliving parts interact as a complex system that are essentially a single organism.

He was an early advocate for climate action, and some of his ideas have shaped the way climate scientists and biologists think about the world's ecosystems today.
