DER KENIANISCHE PALÄOANTHROPOLOGE UND UMWELTSCHÜTZER RICHARD LEAKEY IST GESTORBEN

02.01.2022 Richard Erskine Frere Leakey (Bild), der am 19. Dezember 1944 in Nairobi geborene kenianische Paläoanthropologe, Expeditionsleiter, Direktor des Nationalmuseums von Kenia sowie oberste Chef aller archäologischen Stätten des Landes (1974-1989), der Leiter des Kenya Wildlife Service (1998-2004), der Politiker, Elefantenretter und Buchautor ist am 2. Januar 2022 gestorben. Er gehörte zusammen mit seiner Frau Meave Leakey zu einer weltweit bekannten Familie bedeutender Paläoanthropologen und fand am Turkana-See u. a. fossile Schädel von Homo habilis und Homo erectus. Der Asteroid (7958) Leakey ist nach ihm und seinen Eltern benannt. Richard Leakey wurde wiederholt mit dem Tode bedroht und von der Regierung politisch überwacht, galt aber bis zuletzt als eine der angesehensten Persönlichkeiten Kenias und als Autorität auf dem Gebiet des Umwelt- und Naturschutzes.*

MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE FROM H.E HON. UHURU KENYATTA FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF FORMER HEAD OF PUBLIC SERVICE DR RICHARD LEAKEY

I have this afternoon, Sunday 2nd January 2022, received with deep sorrow the sad news of the passing away of Dr Richard Erskine Frere Leakey, Kenya's former Head of Public Service.

Dr Leakey, a globally renown Kenyan paleoanthropologist and conservationist, has over the years served our country with distinction in several public service roles among them as Director of the National Museums of Kenya and Chairman of the Kenya Wildlife Service Board of Directors.

Besides his distinguished career in the public service, Dr Leakey is celebrated for his prominent role in Kenya's vibrant civil society where he founded and successfully ran a number of institutions among them the conservation organization WildlifeDirect.

President Uhuru Kenyatta confirmed Dr Leakey’s death on Sunday evening, eulogising him as a strong crusader for wildlife protection.

Der weltbekannte kenianische Umweltschützer und Expeditionsleiter Richard Leakey ist im Alter von 77 Jahren gestorben. Das teilte Kenias Staatschef Uhuru Kenyatta am Sonntagabend mit. Leakey leitete in den 1970er-Jahren Expeditionen, bei denen bahnbrechende Funde von Fossilien früher Verwandter des Menschen gemacht wurden. Sie trugen dazu bei, die Theorie von der Entstehung der Menschheit in Afrika zu belegen. Leakeys berühmtester Fund gelang ihm 1984 mit dem nahezu vollständigen Skelett eines Homo erectus.
