N. Scott Momaday, Pulitzer Prize winner and giant of Native American literature, dead at 89

“Scott was an extraordinary person and an extraordinary poet and writer. He was a singular voice in American literature, and it was an honor and a privilege to work with him,” Momaday’s editor, Jennifer Civiletto, said in a statement. “His Kiowa heritage was deeply meaningful to him and he devoted much of his life to celebrating and preserving Native American culture, especially the oral tradition.”

N. Scott Momaday, Pulitzer prize-winner and Native American literary great, dies

We learned this week of the death of N. Scott Momaday at his home in Santa Fe. The novelist, poet, essayist and painter was the first Native American to win a Pulitzer Prize, and he ushered in a renaissance in Native American literature. Megan Kamerick at member station KUNM has this remembrance.

The Pulitzer was a surprise for Mr. Momaday and for others in the publishing world. Originally asked to submit poetry by an editor at the Harper publishing company, he sent instead the relatively slender manuscript of the novel as an entry in the company’s novel contest. Although he had missed the deadline, an editor, Frances McCullough, immediately saw its merit and urged that it be accepted for publication.

Dr. Momaday’s work was credited with opening doors for generations of Native American authors, including James Welch, Sherman Alexie, Leslie Marmon Silko and Louise Erdrich, whose 2020 novel “The Night Watchman” won the Pulitzer in fiction.

“Momaday was the one we all looked up to,” poet Joy Harjo told the American Masters PBS documentary series. “His works were transcendent. There was always a point where despite the challenges and losses … there was some moment that imparted beauty.”
