DIE GHANAISCHE SCHRIFTSTELLERIN AMA ATA AIDOO IST GESTORBEN

02.06.2023 Die am 23. März 1942 in Saltpond geborene ghanaische Schriftstellerin, Aktivistin und Politikerin Christina Ama Ata Aidoo (Bild) ist am 31. Mai 2023 gestorben. Sie genoss weltweite Anerkennung; ihre Bücher wurden in viele Sprachen übersetzt. Aidoo lebte nach ihrer Zeit als Politikerin in Ghana als Autorin in Simbabwe und in den USA, wo sie auch lehrte. Die Werke Aidoos wurden durch die ereignisreiche Geschichte ihres Landes geprägt. Aidoo bearbeitete in ihren Stücken immer wieder die Situation der Frauen in Afrika. Auch politische Fragen thematisierte sie, und sie warf religiöse Fragen auf. So verarbeitet sie etwa in ihrem Buch "Die Zweitfrau" den Konflikt einer Frau mit höherer Schulbildung mit ihrem weniger gebildeten Ehemann. Aidoo gewann für ihre Arbeit 1993 den Commonwealth Writers Prize für das beste Buch (Afrika) für ihren Roman "Changes". Sie wurde 1992 in die Anthologie "Daughters of Africa" aufgenommen. (*)

Ghana’s foremost author, Ama Ata Aidoo dies at 81

Throughout her career, Professor Aidoo gained recognition for her portrayal and celebration of African women's experiences in her works, including notable titles such as "The Dilemma of a Ghost," "Our Sister Killjoy," and "Changes." She vehemently challenged the Western perception that cast African women as downtrodden, advocating for their empowerment and agency.

Professor Aidoo's influence extended beyond her literary achievements. In the early 1980s, she served as the Minister of Education; however, she resigned from the position when she could not fulfill her vision of making education accessible to all Ghanaians free of charge.

Known for exploring the dichotomy between Western and African worldviews in her fiction, Professor Aidoo, who also served as a university professor, received numerous literary accolades throughout her career.

A renowned feminist, she depicted and celebrated the condition of African women in works such as The Dilemma of a Ghost, Our Sister Killjoy and Changes.
