14.06.2022 Der am 9. Dezember 1936 in Jerusalem geborene israelische Schriftsteller und Hochschullehrer Abraham B. Yehoshua (Bild) ist am 14. Juni 2022 in Tel Aviv gestorben. Yehoshua gehörte zu den bekanntesten und beliebtesten Schriftstellern in Israel. Sein Werk umfasst Erzählungen, Romane, Theaterstücke und politische Essays. "Yehoshua machte es sich zur Aufgabe, zwischen Arabern und Israelis eine Mittlerrolle zu spielen. Er war Befürworter eines eigenen Palästinenserstaates. Da er diese Position für nicht mehr realistisch hielt, plädierte er kurz vor seinem Tod für eine 'israelisch-palästinensische Partnerschaft', die in letzter Konsequenz zu einem gemeinsamen Staat führen würde ('Haaretz', 19. April 2018)."* Für seine literarische Arbeit erhielt Yehoshua zahlreiche Preise, darunter 1995 den Israel-Preis, die höchste Auszeichnung des Landes.

Iconic Israeli writer AB Yehoshua passes away at 85
The Israeli essayist, playwright and novelist passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 85, leaving behind a literary legacy.
In eulogizing Yehoshua, President Isaac Herzog said how sad and symbolic it was that Yehoshua, one of the giants of Israeli literature, should go to his final resting place during Israel Book Week. Culture and Sports Minister Chili Tropper said Yehoshua’s books had contributed to the wealth of Israeli literature and culture. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, who is himself an author of 11 books, tweeted: "Today we lost a wonderful human being and a great author. Abraham B. Yehoshua was a unique voice between east and west, the intimate and the national."

Yehoshuas Werke erschienen in 30 Sprachen
Seine Stücke, Erzählungen, Essays und 14 Romane wurden in 30 Sprachen übersetzt. In der DDR erschienen in den 1980er-Jahren Erzählungen unter dem Titel „Angesichts der Wälder“ und der Roman „Der Liebhaber“ im Verlag Volk und Welt.
Zuletzt kam auf Deutsch der Roman „Der Tunnel“ heraus (Verlag Nagel & Kimche), in dem ein pensionierter Straßenbauingenieur langsam dement wird. Mit nachsichtigem Humor schildert Yehoshua die Aussetzer des Mannes, der dann auf einer Reise in die eigene Vergangenheit bei einer Begegnung mit einem palästinensischen Mädchen landet. Wie zum Beispiel auch in den Romanen „Freundesfeuer“ (2010) und „Die Passion des Personalbeauftragten“ (2006) kommt der Grundkonflikt des Staates Israel also auf Umwege in die Erzählung.

Autor Abraham B. Yehoshua ist in Israel als linker Friedensaktivist bekannt. Der Titel des neuen Romans „Der Tunnel“ ist symbolträchtig: Yehoshua glaubt nicht mehr an eine Zweistaatenlösung, wohl aber an Wege des Miteinanders zwischen Juden und Palästinensern.
