20.05.2023 Der am 25. August 1949 in Swansea geborene britische Schriftsteller Martin Amis (Bild) ist am 19. Mai 2023 in Florida (USA) gestorben. Amis' Werke setzen sich mit den Exzessen der spätkapitalistischen westlichen Gesellschaften auseinander. Die von ihm erlebte Absurdität überspitzte er häufig in grotesker Karikatur. Die "New York Times" hat Amis als einen "Meister der Neuen Widerwärtigkeit" bezeichnet. Zu den Autoren, die Amis beeinflussten, zählen Saul Bellow, Vladimir Nabokov und James Joyce. Amis selber beeinflusste eine Reihe britischer Autoren wie Will Self und Zadie Smith. Zu Amis' bekanntesten Werken gehören "Money – A Suicide Note" (1984) und "London Fields" (1989). Für "The Rachel Papers" (1974) erhielt er den Somerset Maugham Award. Für seine Erinnerungen "Experience" (2000), in denen er sich u.a. mit der Beziehung zu seinem berühmten Vater, dem Romancier Kingsley Amis auseinandersetzt, wurde er mit dem James Tait Black Memorial Prize ausgezeichnet.(*)

Salman Rushdie paid tribute to Amis, telling the "New Yorker": "He used to say that what he wanted to do was leave behind a shelf of books - to be able to say, 'from here to here, it's me'."His voice is silent now. His friends will miss him terribly. But we have the shelf."

And another contemporary, Sir Kazuo Ishiguro, told the BBC: "He was a standard-bearer for my generation of novelists and an inspiration to me personally. "For all the bite of his satire, the brilliant swagger of his prose, there was always something tender not far from the surface, a yearning for love and connection. His work will last, surviving the various shifts of fashions and mores."

Martin Amis, literary ‘enfant terrible’, dies aged 73

Born in Oxford, the son of celebrated author Kingsley Amis and Hilary Bardwell, he was the author of 15 novels, two story collections and seven non-fiction works that included his memoir "Experience", released in 2000. His 1984 novel "Money: A Suicide Note", which satirised the excess witnessed in Thatcher’s Britain, was praised as an "era-defining" work whose main character, John Self, was a memorable junk food-eating, chainsmoking, pill-popping monster of a man.

"Violence is what I hate most, is what baffles me and disgusts me most," Amis told The Associated Press in 2012. "Writing comes from silent anxiety, the stuff you don’t know you’re really brooding about and when you start to write you realize you have been brooding about it, but not consciously. It’s terribly mysterious."

Amis was a celebrity in his own right, his life often chronicled by London tabloids since his 1973 debut, "The Rachel Papers." His love life, his change of agents, even his dental work were fodder for stories.
