29.03.2012 Wie die "New York Times" berichtet, starb die 82jährige Dichterin und Aktivistin der Frauen- und Lesbenbewegung Adrienne Rich (Bild) in ihrem Haus im kalifornischen Santa Cruz.

"Die Feminismus-Theoretikerin verfasste Dutzende Werke von Dichtkunst und Prosa, sie lehrte in renommierten Universitäten und gewann zahlreiche Preise, darunter den National Book Award (1974).

1997 weigerte sich die Schriftstellerin, von dem damaligen US-Präsidenten Bill Clinton die 'National Medal of the Arts' anzunehmen. Sie protestierte damit gegen die Ehrung von 'ein paar Vorzeigekünstlern' und erklärte weiter, sie könne keinen Preis vom Weissen Haus in Empfang nehmen, 'denn die Bedeutung von Kunst, wie ich sie verstehe, ist mit der zynischen Politik dieser Regierung unvereinbar'."

"'Rich is one of the few poets who can deal with political issues in her poems without letting them degenerate into social realism,' Erica Jong once wrote.

Unlike most American writers, Rich believed art and politics not only could co-exist, but must co-exist. She considered herself a socialist because 'socialism represents moral value - the dignity and human rights of all citizens,' she told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2005. 'That is, the resources of a society should be shared and the wealth redistributed as widely as possible.'"
