With profound sadness, Ora Media announces the death of our co-founder, host, and friend Larry King, who passed away this morning at age 87 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

For 63 years and across the platforms of radio, television and digital media, Larry's many thousands of interviews, awards, and global acclaim stand as a testament to his unique and lasting talent as a broadcaster. Additionally, while it was his name appearing in the shows' titles, Larry always viewed his interview subjects as the true stars of his programs, and himself as merely an unbiased conduit between the guest and audience. Whether he was interviewing a U.S. president, foreign leader, celebrity, scandal-ridden personage, or an everyman, Larry liked to ask short, direct, and uncomplicated questions. He believed concise questions usually provided the best answers, and he was not wrong in that belief.

Larry King, legendary talk show host, dies at 87

CNN founder Ted Turner, in a statement, said news of King's death "felt like a punch to the gut."

"Larry was one of my closest and dearest friends and, in my opinion, the world's greatest broadcast journalist of all time," he said. "If anyone asked me what are my greatest career achievements in life, one is the creation of CNN, and the other is hiring Larry King. Like so many who worked with and knew Larry, he was a consummate professional, an amazing mentor to many and a good friend to all. The world has lost a true legend."

Larry King, TV host who gave boldface names a cozy forum, dies at 87

Audiences responded to Mr. King's gentle probing, smoky baritone and casual manner. His CNN show served as an antidote to the network’s otherwise round-the-clock breaking news coverage and partisan shout fests. If other interview programs could resemble beds of nails, with "gotcha" inquisitions of newsmakers, Mr. King’s show was a plush chaise longue.

‘A True Legend’: Larry King Remembered as Sharp Interviewer Who Was ‘Gracious and Fun’

In the 1980s and ’90s, for celebrities, politicians, lawyers, activists and many others, an appearance on CNN’s “Larry King Live” was a sign that you’d made it on the national stage.

Larry King obituary

King’s success was based on his asking the kind of questions that might have come from the man or woman in the street, couched in a non-confrontational approach that allowed his subjects freedom to direct the discussion. This made him a popular first choice for those embattled in the public eye, which in turn gave the show its niche. King’s rise coincided with television’s conversion of the political process into a celebrity-driven public forum focused on the private lives of candidates.

He earned a number of honours, including two Peabody awards, but was also criticised for his non-confrontational approach and open-ended questions. King boasted of not doing much research for the interviews so, he said, he could learn along with viewers.

By 2010 his ratings had dropped significantly, with critics saying King's approach felt outdated in an era of more aggressive interviewing styles. King then announced his retirement, saying: "It's time to hang up my nightly suspenders."
