19.08.2017 Mitglieder des Kulturbeirats waren u.a. Schauspieler Kal Penn, Maler und Fotograf Chuck Close, Schriftstellerin Jhumpa Lahiri oder Regisseur George C. Wolfe. Im Brief zu ihrem Rücktritt schreiben die Mitglieder, sie wollten Trumps "hasserfüllte Rhetorik" nicht mittragen: "Supremacy, discrimination, and vitriol are not American values. Your values are not American values."
All 16 of the prominent artists, authors, performers and architects on the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities resigned on Friday, the latest group to protest Donald J. Trump's defense of white nationalists after the violent demonstrations in Charlottesville, Va.
In a letter addressed to Mr. Trump, the committee members blasted his "hateful rhetoric," and they apparently even encoded a message: The first letter of each paragraph and "thank you" spells out "resist."

(...) Talent manager and producer Eric Ortner explained that the group is quitting because, "Our job is to protect those who tell America's story, we wanted to be on the right side of history."
"The false equivalencies you push cannot stand," wrote the committee members, presumably referring to Trump saying that both the white supremacists and the counterprotestors are to blame for Charlottesville. "We cannot sit idly by, the way that your West Wing advisors have, without speaking out against your words and actions." The letter states that ignoring Trump's "hateful rhetoric" would have made the committee complicit with Trump's words and actions.

Der Kulturbeirat wurde im Jahr 1982 vom republikanischen Präsidenten Ronald Reagan geschaffen, um die Zusammenarbeit der Regierung mit privaten und öffentlichen Kulturprogrammen zu koordinieren. Die Ehrenvorsitzende war stets die First Lady, seit Januar Melania Trump.
