Ohne ihn hätten die Beatles niemals Platten wie «Rubber Soul» oder «Sgt. Pepper» aufnehmen können, weshalb Martin schon bald als der fünfte Beatle gehandelt wurde. Das kühne Arrangement zu Lennons «I Am the Walrus», die kargen Streicher von McCartneys «Eleanor Rigby» - Martins Verdienst. Dennoch wies er die Bezeichnung stets zurück - bescheiden, aber nachdrücklich. «Ich war nur die Hebamme», schreibt er in «All You Need Is Ears», seiner Autobiografie.

Bei aller Bescheidenheit und Demut wusste George Martin durchaus um seine Bedeutung als Produzent. So war er es auch, der die Bezeichnung «produced by» auf die Plattenhüllen brachte. In der Unterhaltungsmusik wird man sich an zwei Produzenten immer erinnern: an Sam Philipps, der den Rock'n'Roll durchgesetzt hat, und an George Martin, den Klangmeister der Beatles. Martin ist als Produzent für über 4'830 Titel verantwortlich gewesen und erhielt drei Grammy Awards. 1996 wurde er von Queen Elizabeth II zum Ritter geschlagen und zehn Jahre später in die britische Music Hall of Fame aufgenommen.

Als Produzenten-Grandseigneur unterhielt er in den 1990ern eine Musiksendung bei der BBC, und vor fünf Jahren erschien die Doku Produced by George Martin, in der Wegbegleiter und Kollegen Leben und Werk dieser zum Ritter geschlagenen Ausnahmeerscheinung erzählten. Gegangen mag er nun sein, vergessen sein wird George Martin nie. Nicht, solange irgendwo auf diesem Planeten die Musik der Beatles gespielt wird.

For The Beatles' first U.S. single, "Please Please Me," in November 1962, he convinced the boys to speed up the tempo. It proved to be a smash hit. "Gentlemen, you have just made your first No. 1 record," he memorably told them from the control room.
