29.01.2023 Der am 13. Dezember 1949 in Wilmington (Delaware) als Thomas Miller geborene US-amerikanische Sänger, Gitarrist und Songwriter Tom Verlaine (Bild) ist am 28. Januar 2023 in New York City gestorben. Bekannt wurde er als Frontmann der einflussreichen New Yorker Rockband Television. Das Debütalbum von Television, "Marquee Moon" (1977), wurde immer wieder als eines der besten Alben der 1970er-Jahre gefeiert (gemäss "Pitchfork"/"Zeit online"). Verlaine lebte und arbeitete in den 1970ern mit Patti Smith zusammen. Er gab mehrere Soloalben heraus. Er war auch Mitglied der Band The Million Dollar Bashers, die einen Teil der Musik zum Film "I'm Not There" einspielte. Der "Rolling Stone" listete Verlaine 2011 auf Rang 90 der 100 besten Gitarristen aller Zeiten. In einer Liste aus dem Jahr 2003 hatte er Rang 56 belegt.

Patti Smith famously described Tom Verlaine's guitar sound as "a thousand bluebirds screaming." Television's leader soaked up the flavor of favorite records by John Coltrane, the Stones and the Dead – then synthesized them into something entirely new on the band's 1977 debut, Marquee Moon, spinning out endless fluid solos in concert with fellow guitar aesthete Richard Lloyd. Verlaine has kept a low profile in recent decades, but he remains a model for generations of guitarists with a taste for both punk violence and melodic flight.

Following Television, Verlaine continued on with his solo career, releasing his eponymous debut in 1979 and a number of albums throughout the ’80s, 1990s, and into the 2000s.

In 1994, Verlaine composed the music for the crime film "Love and a .45", and along with appearing on a number of (Patti) Smith’s albums—including "Gone Again", "Gung Ho", "Twelve", and her 2012 release "Banga"—he also collaborated with David Bowie, Violent Femmes, Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha, and a number of other artists over the years. By the late ’90s, Verlaine was also beginning to work with Jeff Buckley on a project before his death in 1997.

Verlaine also started the supergroup the Million Dollar Bashers with Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo and The Buzzcocks’ drummer Steve Shelley, along with Bob Dylan bassist Tony Garnier, Wilco guitarist Nels Cline, keyboardist John Medeski, and guitarist Smokey Hormel. The band contributed to the soundtrack of the 2007 Bob Dylan biopic, "I’m Not There".

Die Antithese zu Punk. Und doch, Verlaine war bei der Geburt von Punk in New York ein wichtiger Faktor.

Nur wie das im Pop mit seinen Ungerechtigkeiten oft ist: Der Ruhm und auch ökonomische Erfolg, den die Zeitgenossen und Mitstreiter hatten, die Ramones, Patti Smith oder Blondie, sollte Verlaine nie erlangen.

Die dünnste Stimme der New Wave

Er sang über Augen wie Teleskope, über Licht, das durch die Nacht führt, und über den Zauber der Venus von Milo. Letzteres mit großen Zeilen wie: "The world was so thin between my bones and skin." Und das von einem Mann, der damals (...) kaum mehr war als Haut und Knochen. Diese Hypersensibilität macht heute noch kribblig, an den innig verflochtenen Gitarrenlinien hört man heute mehr als damals, dass die New Wave nicht völlig konträr zu mancher Musik der Hippies war.
