16.04.2020 Der am 13. Oktober 1927 in Chicago geborene Jazzsaxofonist Lee Konitz (Bild) ist am 15. April 2020 in Greenwich Village (New York City) an den Folgen von COVID-19 gestorben. 1992 wurde er mit dem hochdotierten Jazzpar-Preis ausgezeichnet. 2009 erhielt er die NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship, die wichtigste Auszeichnung für amerikanische Jazzmusiker. 2013 wurde ihm die German Jazz Trophy verliehen. 2015 wurde Lee Konitz in die Down Beat Hall of Fame aufgenommen.*

At first, Mr. Konitz mastered Parker's restless, high-speed cascades of sound - then deliberately went in a different musical direction. Guided by his studies with Lennie Tristano, a blind pianist who sought to blend elements of classical music with jazz, Mr. Konitz developed a style in which his improvised solos seemed to float like clouds, structured not as bursts of sound but as well-wrought musical sculptures, built over shifting harmonies.

A recipient of of an NEA Jazz Masters fellowship, Konitz was revered for his work alongside Miles Davis on 1949 and 1950 recordings that eventually were compiled into Birth Of The Cool.

Konitz would go on to record dozens of albums during a career that spanned nine decades and worked with everyone from Kenny Burrell and Art Farmer to Ethan Iverson and Dan Tepfer.
