19.05.2022 Der am 29. März 1943 in Agria bei Volos geborene griechische Musiker und Komponist Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou (Bild), weltweit bekannt als Vangelis, ist am 17. Mai 2022 gestorben. Er galt als Pionier der elektronischen Musik und bespielte ein breites Spektrum von Schlager und Progressive Rock über New Age bis Dark Ambient, von der Film- zur Ballett- und Orchestermusik. Seine bekanntesten Kompositionen umfassen die 1982 mit dem Oscar ausgezeichnete Musik zum Film "Die Stunde des Siegers" (Chariots of Fire) sowie die Filmmusiken zu "Blade Runner", "1492 – Die Eroberung des Paradieses" (1492: Conquest of Paradise) und "Die Bounty". Er komponierte ausserdem u.a. die Hymne der Fussball-Weltmeisterschaft 2002. Erste internationale Erfolge feierte Vangelis Ende der 1960er-Jahre zusammen mit Demis Roussos und Lucas Sideras mit der Gruppe Aphrodites’s Child ("Rain and Tears").

Ο παγκοσμίου εμβέλειας Έλληνας συνθέτης, Βαγγέλης Παπαθανασίου, έφυγε από τη ζωή σε ηλικία 79 ετών από επιπλοκές του κορονοϊού σε νοσοκομείο της Γαλλίας. Η είδηση του θανάτου του προκάλεψε μεγάλη θλίψη στο καλλιτεχνικό κόσμο και στους πολλούς φίλους της μουσικής του.

Vangelis, the Greek composer whose rousing electronic theme music for the Oscar-winning “Chariots of Fire” was one of the best-known film scores of the 1980s, has died at the age of 79, the Athens News Agency said on Thursday.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and other government officials expressed their condolences Thursday. “Vangelis Papathanassiou is no longer among us,” Mitsotakis tweeted.

While he was most associated with the synthesizer, the instrument was also a source of frustration for him. "I've been using synthesizers for so many years, but they've never been designed properly. They create a lot of problems." he told NPR in 2016. "The computers have completely different logic than the human logic." So for his 2016 record "Rosetta", dedicated to the space probe of the same name, he simply built his own synthesizer.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis a aussi souligné que le deuxième prénom de Vangelis était Ulysse. "Pour nous les Grecs, cela signifie qu'il a commencé son grand voyage sur les chariots de Feu. De là, il nous enverra toujours ses notes", a encore tweeté Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Vangelis, das Lieblingskind der Götter, ist tot
Seine Musik hatte wesentlichen Anteil am Welterfolg von «Blade Runner», zuvor schrieb Vangelis die Filmmusik zu «Chariots of Fire», die ihm einen Oscar eintrug. Jetzt ist der Wegbereiter der elektronischen Pop-Musik an den Folgen einer Covid-19-Erkrankung gestorben.
