ZUM TOD DES BRITISCHEN FOLKSÄNGERS UND SOZIOLOGEN ROY BAILEY
24.11.2018 Der am 20. Oktober 1935 in London geborene britische Folksänger, Gitarrist und Soziologieprofessor Roy Bailey (Bild) ist am 20. November 2018 in Sheffield gestorben.

A long & wonderful journey
In einem Brief an Urs Klauser (http://www.tritonus.ch/) vom 21. Mai 2018 schrieb Roy Bailey:
"... I certainly remember my happy times in your country, where I made so many friends! I'm now 82 years old and still singing!! It has been and continues to be, al long & wonderful journey! I've been round the world at least twice, especially since I retired from academic life in 1989. Since then I have concentrated on my singing and have travelled the world - from Vancouver to Sydney and from Cape Town to Stockholm.
Thank you so much for the recordings of my visits to Switzerland. So many memories, so many friends. You all remain, in my mind, young men and women, even though it has been say, 30+ years since we met! ..."
Roy Bailey obituary
Singer whose political brand of folk music brought him fame in Europe and the US
Although Roy Bailey, who has died aged 83, played a significant role in the development of sociology in Britain, he was most widely known as a folk singer. He started in the folk clubs around Southampton and Portsmouth in the early 60s, with a repertoire of the US-based folk and skiffle popular at the time, but quickly found his voice in folk music as a popular expression of political and social dissent. Influenced by singers as diverse as Ewan MacColl and Bob Dylan, he became convinced that folk music could become a powerful vehicle for contemporary social criticism.
As folk gained in popularity, Roy became a star attraction. His rich baritone voice, his charm and skill as a performer, together with his evocation of traditional folk themes, gave him an appeal to a much wider audience than either a purely cultural interest in folk or an unadorned political radicalism would have.

Roy
Bailey, folk singer
A musician who played alongside Paul Simon, Pete Seeger, Billy Bragg and Tom Paxton on the international circuit, he was also a professor of social studies and the recipient of an MBE, which he returned. He performed his final concert in his adopted city only a few weeks ago, after decades using his music to explore poverty, war and inequality.

Legendary Folk Singer and Humanitarian Roy Bailey Dies at 83
My first real experience of Roy's musical power came via Leaves from a Tree (1988). The album took its title from the short opening song which, in essence, is a reminder of the strength to be found in solidarity and likens protesters to the "leaves from a tree" which, whilst individually vulnerable, the roots of the tree are firmly rooted to the land. It serves as a reminder that change in society is often brought about by standing strong together.
