Escalera mit puertoricanischen und kubanischen Wurzeln geborene US-amerikanische Sängerin, Tänzerin und Schauspielerin Irene Cara (Bild) ist am 25. November 2022 in Miami (Florida) gestorben. Ihre bekanntesten Songs sind die Titellieder "Fame" aus "Fame – Der Weg zum Ruhm" (1980) und "Flashdance … What a Feeling" aus "Flashdance" (1983) (*). Für den zusammen mit dem Italo-Disco-Produzenten Giorgio Moroder und Keith Forsey geschriebenen Hit "What a Feeling" gewann Irene Cara neben einem Oscar auch einen Golden Globe und einen Grammy-Award. Nach einer Pause kehrte sie Anfang 2001 als Gast von DJ BoBo mit "What a Feeling" in die Charts zurück.

Cara first shot to fame when she was cast in the 1980 musical 'Fame'. After being initially cast as a dancer, the role of Coco Hernandez was written for her and she sang the title track. Her performance won her two Grammy awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Artist.

She later sang and co-wrote ‘Flashdance… What A Feeling’ for the soundtrack of the 1983 blockbuster 'Flashdance', for which she also won a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance as well as an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
