Mad River was a late 60's early 70's Bay Area group, notorious in the West Coast underground scene for their innovative song writing, unique sound, and electrifying stage performances. Any knowledgeable follower of this scene will fondly remember them as a talented group on the verge of larger success at the time of their dissolution - commiserated in order to pursue a variety of different musical enterprises.

Today, Mad River maintains it's original fan base, and has newer followers in Japan and Western Europe. Capitol records has recently released a double-disc edition of their two albums. It is easily purchased from Amazon.com.

Mad River's self-titled debut is a dark, but enticingly melodic work. "High All the Time" is a snappy, agile rock song, full of dextrous guitar playing coupled with a catchy melody. "Eastern Light" is swinging and beautiful, founded on a masterful chord progression, melonchoy and strangely uplifting. "The War Goes On" sums up the album in an epic, progressive manner more analogous to a modern work of stormy chamber music than traditional rock. "Paradise Bar & Grill" represented a dramatic change of course. Deviating from a psychedelic sound, the record contains calmer melodies, more acoustic guitar, and better sound quality - thanks to Jerry Corbitt of the Youngbloods. "Paradise Bar and Grill" is perhaps the most memorable song Mad River ever recorded. Any one appreciating country-influenced indie music could find this song anthematic of the sub-genre. This doesn't mean Mad River couldn't still pack a punch. "Revolution's in My Pockets" kicks a snappy chorus, skillfull harmony, and a beat that makes it hard to sit still. In keeping the current resurrection of talent in music, Mad River has become applicable to the tastes of many present-day music fans.
