Musician Philip Chevron, long-time guitarist with Irish folk-punk act The Pogues, has died after a battle with cancer.

The 56-year-old, who died on Tuesday, performed on some of the band's best known albums including Rum, Sodomy And The Lash and If I Should Fall From Grace With God after joining the line-up in 1984.

Originally featured on the 1988 Pogues album If I Should Fall From Grace With God, the song's heartfelt lyric, soaring tune and compelling chorus on the theme of emigration from Ireland to America struck such a potent chord of authenticity with Irish audiences that it has already passed into folklore.

Chevron joined the Pogues after the release of their first album, 1984's Red Roses for Me, as a temporary member. By the time the band released the follow-up, Rum, Sodomy & the Lash, Chevron had become a permanent fixture, and contributed one of the Pogues' most beloved songs, "Thousands Are Sailing."

Before joining the Pogues, Chevron founded one of Ireland's first punk bands, Radiators From Space, in  1976.

In 1976, Chevron had founded one of Ireland's first punk bands, the Radiators from Space. Their songs were later covered by folk singers including Christy Moore and Mary Coughlan.
