26.12.2021 Die am 9. August 1943 in Inkster (Michigan) geborene US-amerikanische Sängerin Wanda Young (Bild) ist am 15. Dezember 2021 in Garden City (Michigan) gestorben. International bekannt wurde sie zunächst als Mitglied, ab 1965 als Leadsängerin der "all-female" Motown-Gruppe The Marvelettes, die mit "Please Mr. Postman", "Twistin' Postman", "Playboy", "Too Many Fish In The Sea" usw. grosse Hits feiern konnte. Noch berühmter wurde "Please Mr. Postman" später durch die Versionen der Beatles und der Carpenters. Mit 21 Hits in den R&B-Charts und 23 Hits in den Pop-Charts waren die Marvelettes eine der erfolgreichsten Girlgroups der 1960er-Jahre.

Young replaced another singer in the Michigan group when Motown head Berry Gordy signed the band in 1961. A month later, The Marvelettes’ “Please Mr. Postman” became the first song on the young label to reach the top of the charts.
