Juni 1983 in Huntington (New York) geborene US-amerikanische Jazz- und Improvisationsmusikerin (Trompete, Elektronik), Komponistin und Produzentin jaimie branch (Bild) ist am 22. August 2022 in Brooklyn (New York City) gestorben. "Sie kultivierte eine Art Punk-Attitüde im Jazz und füllte damit eine Lücke (...)", meinte Jazz-Experte Matthias Wegner im Deutschlandfunk Kultur. "Das (...) lenkte ein wenig davon ab, dass sie auch eine höchst bemerkenswerte und talentierte Trompeterin war." jaimie branch unterhielt eine besondere Beziehung zum Zürcher Club Moods: 2021 kam eine Live-Version von "Fly or Die" als Doppel-LP heraus, die dort aufgenommen worden war.

branch could conjure a world of personal expression with her trumpet, sounding brash and conflagratory one moment, bleary and contemplative the next. What she always conveyed with her horn, in any setting, was an absolute whole-body conviction. One reason she became a beloved linchpin of the creative music community over the last decade was this spirit of gutsy intensity. Her demeanor, by comparison, was often hilariously profane and ultracasual — qualities she hinted at with a preferred moniker, jaimie breezy branch (no caps).

branch was known for her fierce solo albums: she released Fly Or Die in 2017, described by the Chicago Reader as a “stunning quartet recording that knits together several threads in Branch’s music – laser-sharp improvisatory exploration, ebullient melodies and a deep feeling for groove”.

It was followed in 2019 by Fly Or Die II: Bird Dogs of Paradise, recorded live at the London venues Total Refreshment Centre and Cafe Oto. It featured her vocals for the first time as she excoriated racism and border control and defended life’s misfits. “At its peak, jaimie branch’s trumpet playing has the feeling of a prelingual shriek, a cry out into the distance that intuits no response,” Guardian critic Ammar Kalia wrote of the album.

Hommage à jaimie branch

Nous avons appris hier soir la disparition de jaimie branch. Compositrice et trompettiste, elle était venue présenter le second opus de FLY OR DIE en janvier 2020 au Pannonica. Inventive, singulière, généreuse, elle avait offert à la salle une performance entière et bien à elle, le genre de concert qui reste en tête. On sent encore la sueur de ce Pannonica complet, on entend toujours l’enthousiasme des applaudissements, on se souvient de ses prises de parole, sa sincérité et sa personnalité indéfectible ! Mémorable !

jaimie branch faisait partie d’une génération de musicien·nes généreuse, ouverte, dynamique, offrant de si belles choses à écouter sous la teinte du fameux label international anthem. Un univers inspirant dont elle était une figure de proue, qui manquera assurément à la scène jazz internationale.

In den vergangenen Jahren hatte jaimie branch eine außerordentliche Entwicklung genommen und war als Trompeterin und Komponistin sehr präsent. Im Jahr 2017 veröffentlichte sie ihr erstes Soloalbum „Fly or Die“ auf International Anthem. Im Jahr 2019 folgte die Fortsetzung – „Fly or Die II: Bird Dogs of Paradise“. 2021 kam eine Live-Version von „Fly or Die“ als Doppel-LP heraus, die im Züricher Club Moods in der Schweiz aufgenommen worden war.

Wer Menschen, die Jazz für Gedudel halten, vom Gegenteil überzeugen wollte, konnte in letzter Zeit die beiden Soloalben von Jaimie Branch auflegen. Der Rest ergab sich dann meist wie von selbst.
