1978 erhielt Marian McPartland das Angebot von National Public Radio, eine wöchentliche Sendung zu moderieren. Sie machte einen Gegenvorschlag: Am Klavier sitzend wollte sie moderieren und dabei jeweils einen Gast einladen, um mit diesem gemeinsam zu musizieren. Der Vorschlag wurde angenommen. Erster Gast in Marian McPartlands Piano Jazz war am 4. Juni 1978 Mary Lou Williams. Insgesamt plauderte und musizierte Marian McPartland in ihrer wöchentlichen Sendung mit mehr als 700 Gästen, etwa mit Oscar Peterson, Cleo Patra Brown, Bill Evans, Rosemary Clooney, Teddy Wilson, Carmen McRae, Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Amina Claudine Myers, Keith Jarrett, Alice Coltrane, aber auch mit John Medeski, Linda Ronstadt oder Elvis Costello. Bis ins Jahr 2010 war sie die Gastgeberin dieser Sendung.Ein Teil dieser musikalischen Porträts wurde auch auf Alben bw. CDs herausgebracht. 2004 erhielt sie dafür einen Grammy. Ab den 1970er-Jahren nahm sie auch zahlreiche (an die 60) Alben für Concord auf, darunter das Duo-Album Ain't Misbehavin': Live at the Jazz Showcase mit Willie Pickens.

Das swingende Spiel von McPartland ist darüber hinaus auf zahlreichen Tonträgern mit Modern Jazz dokumentiert. Ihre Komposition Twilight World wurde zum Standard.

McPartland died of natural causes Tuesday night at her Port Washington home on Long Island, said Anna Christopher Bross, a spokeswoman for NPR.

Over a career that spanned more than six decades, McPartland became a fixture in the jazz world as a talented musician and well-loved radio personality.

In an interview with The Associated Press in 2007, the 89-year-old said she saw no reason to retire.

"Retire? Why retire? I've got a job, I'm making money, and I like what I do. Why retire?" she asked. "I think I'll jump out of a cake, or something."

Marian McPartland's playing was characterised by a combination of rhythmic toughness and great delicacy of touch, which enabled her to cover a remarkably wide range of styles and expressive moods. Throughout her long career her music continued to grow and mature. She recorded some of her finest work in her seventies and early eighties.

Ms. McPartland's contributions to jazz were not limited to her piano playing. An enthusiastic and articulate spokeswoman for the music, she lectured at schools and colleges and wrote for Down Beat, Melody Maker and other publications. (A collection of her essays, "All in Good Time," was published in 1987 and reissued in 2003.) Most notably, for more than 30 years her "Piano Jazz" was one of the most popular jazz shows ever heard on the radio.
