06.07.2023 Die am 17. Januar 1975 in Hongkong geborene US-amerikanische Popsängerin CoCo Lee ist am 5. Juli 2023 ebenda gestorben. Sie sang auf Englisch, Mandarin und Kantonesisch und war vor allem in den USA, in Asien und in Australien bekannt. 2000 sang Lee den Titel "A Love Before Time" für den Film "Tiger and Dragon" ein. Das Lied wurde für einen Oscar in der Kategorie Bester Song nominiert und ein Auftritt Lees bei der Oscarverleihung 2001 folgte. Mit dem Soultitel "Do You Want My Love" erreichte sie die Charts in Australien und Neuseeland sowie die US-Dance-Club-Song-Charts. Lee litt seit einigen Jahren an Depressionen und verstarb am 5. Her fluency in Cantonese, Mandarin and English helped Lee access a fan base not only in Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan, but also in Southeast Asian countries like Singapore and Malaysia, as well as in Australia.

She had a career of some 30 years, which included providing the voice of the heroine Mulan in the Mandarin-language version of Disney’s “Mulan.”

Lee, who was educated in both Hong Kong and the U.S., enjoyed success in the 1990s in Hong Kong in the Mandopop (Mandarin-language pop) scene before expanding into Cantonese and English.

Trotz ihrer zahlreichen Erfolge und einem scheinbar erfüllten Privatleben hatte die Sängerin mit Depressionen zu kämpfen. Ihre Schwestern bestätigten, dass sich Lees Zustand in den letzten Monaten verschlimmert habe, obwohl sie professionelle Hilfe in Anspruch nahm. Am Sonntag, den 2. Juli, soll sie einen Suizidversuch unternommen haben. Nachdem sie bewusstlos aufgefunden wurde, lieferten Angehörige sie in ein Krankenhaus ein. Ärzte konnten ihr nicht mehr helfen, und so verschied die Sängerin nur drei Tage später.
