DER US-AMERIKANISCHE SOUL-, FUNK- UND DISCO-MUSIKER DENNIS THOMAS (KOOL & THE GANG) IST GESTORBEN

07.08.2021 Dennis "Dee Tee" Thomas, Mitbegründer der US-amerikanischen Soul-, Funk- und Disco-Band Kool & the Gang, ist am 7. August 2021 im Alter von 70 Jahren gestorben. Thomas war der Altsaxophonist, Flötist und Perkussionist der Band, die weltweit mehr als 80 Millionen Alben verkauft hat. 1979 gelang der Gruppe mit dem Titel "Ladies' Night" der erste grosse internationale Erfolg. 25 Mal schafften es ihre Singles in die Top Ten. Für ihre Alben erhielt die Band 31 Gold- und Platin-Ehrungen sowie 1985 Doppelplatin für die Langspielplatte "Emergency". Der brasilianische Musiker und Produzent Eumir Deodato trug massgeblich zu diesen Erfolgen bei. Bläsersätze, das Disco-Fundament und die Gesangslinien waren typisch für weitere Hits der Gruppe wie "Fresh", "Celebration" oder "Joanna".* Die Band gewann zwei Grammy Awards und sieben American Music Awards.

An original member of Kool & the Gang, Dennis was known as the quintessential cool cat in the group, loved for his hip clothes and hats, and his laid-back demeanor. A huge personality while also an extremely private person, Dennis was the alto saxophone player, flutist, percussionist as well as master of ceremonies at the band’s shows. Dennis’ prologue featured on the groups 1971 hit, “Who’s Gonna Take the Weight” is legendary and an example of his showmanship. Dee Tee was the group’s wardrobe stylist who made sure they always looked fresh. In the band’s early days, Dennis also served as the “budget hawk”, carrying the group’s earnings in a paper bag in the bell of his horn.

In 2014, the band earned the Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award, and was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame the following year. Most recently, Thomas was interviewed for “Kool TV,” a series of animated shorts about each band member’s childhood and career. Thomas’ fellow Kool & the Gang co-founder, Ronald Bell, died in September 2020.
