20.09.2024 Der am 2. November 1945 in Detroit geborene US-amerikanische Singer-Songwriter, Countryrock-Sänger und Schauspieler J.D. Souther (Bild) ist am 17. September 2024 in New Mexico gestorben. Schon früh spielte er mit Glenn Frey (später Eagles), Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder, Doug Kershaw, Chris Hillmann usw. Zu den grössten Hits Southers als Songschreiber gehören "Best of My Love", "Victim of Love", "Heartache Tonight" und "New Kid in Town" (alle von den Eagles interpretiert). Er schrieb auch Songs für seine Freundin Linda Ronstadt und nahm mehrere Stücke mit ihr auf. Southers grösster Hit als Solokünstler war 1979 das Stück "You’re Only Lonely", ein Top-Ten-Hit in den Billboard-Charts. Bis auf Platz 11 kam das mit James Taylor veröffentlichte "Her Town Too". Souther — whose best-known songs include the Eagles’ “New Kid in Town” and “Heartache Tonight,” Ronstadt’s “Faithless Love” and his own “You’re Only Lonely,” which gave him a top-10 pop hit in 1979 — also was an actor, with roles on TV’s “Thirtysomething” and “Nashville” and in movies including “My Girl 2” and “Postcards From the Edge.” Among the other acts who recorded his songs were Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, George Strait and the Chicks.

Many of Souther’s longtime friends, collaborators, and fellow musicians shared tributes following the news of his death. In a heartfelt post, the Eagles remembered Souther as “an extraordinary man” who “will be greatly missed by many.”

“We have lost a brother, a friend and a brilliant collaborator, and the world has lost a great songwriter, a pioneer of the Southern California sound that emerged in the 1970s,” the Eagles said in their statement.

Former bandmate Hillman mourned the artist and said he counted Souther “as a great blessing in my life.” Hillman added, “He possessed a great sense of humor, and was one of the most intelligent people that ever crossed my path. The voice, the songs he wrote will forever be in my heart.”

Graham Nash shared a photo he took of Souther playing the guitar in 1971 and wrote on Instagram Stories: “So sad to hear about JD passing. He was an inspiration to many musicians and friend to many more.”

Carole King also shared the photo in another post, writing, “JD Souther was a friend, and so talented. We’ll miss him.”
