03.01.2023 Der am 13. Januar 1955 in Chicago geborene US-amerikanische Schlagzeuger Frederick Eugene "Freddie" White ist am 1. Januar 2023 gestorben. Er war von 1974 bis 1984 Drummer bei der von seinem Halbbruder Maurice White gegründeten amerikanischen Soul- und Funk-Band Earth, Wind & Fire, die mit Titeln wie "Boogie Wonderland" oder "September" weit über die USA hinaus Grosserfolge feierte, sechs Grammys gewann und bis jetzt mehr als 90 Millionen Tonträger verkauft hat.

Fred White, who played drums for the era-defining and genre-defying band Earth, Wind & Fire, has died at the age of 67, his brother and the band announced on social media. Fred White was already an accomplished drummer, playing for Donny Hathaway, before he joined Earth, Wind & Fire in the mid-1970s alongside drummer and percussionist Ralph Johnson. The band’s rhythm section was tight and upbeat and set the stage for songs like “Boogie Wonderland” and “September” to become instant favorites.

White was part of a family legacy at the ensemble’s core, as the brother of Verdine White and half-brother of Maurice White. Although long since departed from the group, in 2000 he was inducted with other core members into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Besides playing on classic EWF albums starting with “That’s the Way of the World” in 1975 on through “Electric Universe” in 1983, White also played drums on 1970s albums by artists including Little Feat, Donny Hathaway, the Emotions and Deniece Williams.
