Bobby Caldwell, ‘What You Won’t Do for Love’ Singer, Dead at 71
Blue-eyed soul star beloved by hip-hop beat makers and Black audiences dies following years of health issues.
Much of Caldwell’s contemporary success comes from his catalog being a go-to for hip-hop producers: J Dilla sampled his “Open Your Eyes” for Common’s 2000 single “The Light,” and Kendrick Lamar used the same song for his “R.O.T.C.” Caldwell’s “My Flame” was utilized on the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Sky’s the Limit” with 112, and his “Carry On” was sampled by A$AP Rocky and Lil Nas X, the latter of whom faced a $25 million lawsuit filed by Caldwell over the internet-only track.

Describing his sound, which mixed pop with smooth jazz, R&B and a Brazilian/island vibe, Caldwell told NPR that his time growing up in Miami soaking up all kinds of music — “Haitian, reggae, Latin, pop, R&B” — as well as befriending his real estate mom’s client, reggae icon Bob Marley, helped him find his signature groove.

Caldwell's signature voice transcended genres of jazz, R&B and rock as his soulful hit song "What You Won't Do For Love" ascended the Billboard 100 charts after its 1978 release on the debut album of the same name.
"What You Won't Do For Love" became a multi-generational hit, in part because of its wide appeal as a sample and cover song. Tupac Shakur sampled the track on his 1998 "Do for Love," and Boyz II Men, Snoh Aalegra, Michael Bolton and more have re-recorded it as a cover.
