IRON BUTTERFLY founding member, organist, primary composer and lead vocalist Doug Ingle has died at the age of 78

In July of 1968, IRON BUTTERFLY released its debut LP, "Heavy", and went on the road with the likes of THE DOORS, CREAM and THE WHO, while the album stayed on the Billboard chart for nearly a year.

Their second release in July 1968 was the monumental "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". The 17-minute title track helped the album sell more than 30 million copies, and a three-minute version of the song became a Top 40 hit.

"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" was famously covered by SLAYER on the "Less Than Zero" soundtrack.

Founding and last surviving member of hard rock band's "classic lineup" co-wrote 17-minute psych-rock epic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida"

Ingle was the last surviving member of Iron Butterfly’s “classic,” In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida-era lineup: Guitarist Erik Brann died in 2003 at the age of 52, bassist Lee Dornan died in 2012 at the age of 70, and drummer Ron Bushy died in 2021 at the age of 79.

Of the four musicians in the In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida lineup, Ingle was the only one who was a founding member, having formed Iron Butterfly in San Diego in 1966.

A shortened version of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" peaked at No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1968, one of four Iron Butterfly titles to impact the chart

Its parent album hit No. 4 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (and remained on the chart for 140 weeks, a long run at the time for a rock album), while 1969’s "Ball" went to No. 3.

Singer and organist wrote 17-minute classic "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida", taking the album of the same name to four million US sales

Having made millions with the band and bought a 600-acre ranch among other properties, Ingle later admitted: "I didn’t involve myself at the business level at all", and found himself in debt to the US Internal Revenue Service. He managed a park for recreational vehicles in Los Angeles during the mid-1970s, but returned to Iron Butterfly for various tours until a final spell with the group in the mid-1990s.

"In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida" became an enduring hit and pop-cultural reference point, appearing in the Simpsons and inspiring cover versions by artists as varied as Slayer, the Residents, High Contrast and Boney M.
