10.12.2021 Der am 30. Dezember 1942 in Houston (Texas) geborene US-amerikanische Musikproduzent, Sänger, Autor, Multiinstrumentalist und Schauspieler Robert Michael Nesmith (Bild) ist am 10. Dezember 2021 gestorben. Grosse internationale Bekanntheit erreichte Michael Nesmith mit seinen Kollegen in den 1960er-Jahren als Mitglied der gecasteten Pop-Rock-Band The Monkees. Darüber hinaus lieferte Nesmith die Grundidee für den Musiksender MTV und trat als Produzent des Kultfilms "Repoman" von Alex Cox in Erscheinung.*

Michael Nesmith, Monkees Singer-Songwriter, Dead at 78

“With infinite love we announce that Michael Nesmith has passed away this morning in his home, surrounded by family, peacefully and of natural causes,” his family said in a statement.

Monkees singer and guitarist Michael Nesmith, a pop visionary who penned many of the group’s most enduring songs before laying the groundwork for country rock with the First National Band in the early Seventies, died Friday from natural causes.

Nesmith — who died Friday (Dec. 10) at the age of 78 from natural causes — certainly got some due for his writing prowess during his life and even handed a big hit, “Different Drum,” to Linda Ronstadt and her band the Stone Poneys. Steering 15 albums outside of his Monkees work, Nesmith had more top-shelf material than most casual fans realize. Monkees tour manager Andrew Sandoval said the group had just recently been performing.

"We shared many travels and projects together over the course of 30 years, which culminated in a Monkees farewell tour that wrapped up only a few weeks ago," Sandoval tweeted.

Nesmith and surviving band member Dolenz last performed in Los Angeles on Nov. 14.

Michael Nesmith — Monkee Mike, Nez to fans — died Friday at the age of 78, leaving Mickey Dolenz the last of the Monkees after the deaths of Davy Jones in 2012 and Peter Tork in 2019. Formed for a 1960s NBC sitcom, the group transcended its casting-call roots to make a mark on its time, and times to follow.
