08.05.2022 Der am 9. März 1936 in Natchez (Mississippi) geborene US-amerikanische Country-Sänger und Pianist Mickey Gilley (Bild) ist am 7. Mai 2022 in Branson (Missouri) gestorben. Ab Mitte der 1970er- bis weit in die 1980er-Jahre gehörte er zu den erfolgreichsten Interpreten seines Genres. Er hatte 17 Nummer-eins-Hits in den Country-Charts. 1980 wurden er und seine Band mit einem Grammy ausgezeichnet.*

He had 39 Top 10 country hits and 17 No. 1 songs and received six Academy of Country Music Awards. He also worked on occasion as an actor, with appearances on “Murder, She Wrote,” “The Fall Guy,” “Fantasy Island” and “The Dukes of Hazzard.”

Born in Mississippi and raised in Louisiana, Gilley's family included artist Jerry Lee Lewis and televangelist Jimmy Swaggart as cousins. He learned to play piano as a child and began his professional music career in the 1950s when he recorded his first single, "Ooh Wee Baby."
