J. Geils, Whose Band's Catchy Pop Hits Colored the 1980s, Dies at 71

"I founded the band as a Chicago-style blues band, and it evolved into a bluesy rock band," Mr. Geils said in a 2015 interview with the website Best Classic Bands. "I don't care what any recording artist says; they all want a No. 1 gold single, and we have two."

The J. Geils Band was launched as a blues trio in Worcester, Massachusetts, in the 1960s. It soon switched its focus to electric guitars and bass as it became a staple of the Boston music scene through the 1970s with Geils as its lead guitarist and Peter Wolf on vocals, the group said on its Facebook page.

The J. Geils Band was one of the most popular American touring bands of the 1970s. It did not achieve commercial fame until the 1980s, when they released radio mainstays such as "Centerfold," "Love Stinks" and "Freeze-Frame."

Outside of the J. Geils Band, Geils remained busy as a musician. In the mid-Nineties, he released two albums with his band Bluestime and during the 2000s, he returned to his jazz roots with three solo records.

Although other groups achieved more chartbusting hit records, the J Geils Band became one of the most popular live acts in the US during the 1970s and early 80s, and were able to pack arenas with their rowdy, blues-based, good-time rock'n'roll.

J. Geils, the Prototypical All-Around Guitarist: An Appreciation

"I've never considered myself just a blues player or just a rock player or anything like that. I just go with whatever it feels right to play at the time."

Peter Wolf might have gotten the (deserved) spotlight in the J. Geils Band. But anyone who paid attention knew that John Warren "J." Geils Jr. himself was the Boston group's secret weapon.
