DER US-AMERIKANISCH-DEUTSCHE PIANIST MICHAEL PONTI IST GESTORBEN

18.10.2022 Der am 29. Oktober 1937 in Freiburg im Breisgau geborene US-amerikanisch-deutsche Pianist Michael Ponti (Bild) ist am 17. Oktober 2022 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen gestorben. Seine internationale Karriere begann mit dem 1. Preis beim Busoni-Wettbewerb 1964, nachdem er bei diesem Wettbewerb bereits 1956 den 4. und 1958 den 3. Preis erhalten hatte. Ponti galt als Pianist, der die technischen Schwierigkeiten suchte. Zu seinem New Yorker Debüt spielte er drei Stunden lang und gab neun Zugaben. Anfang der 1970er-Jahre nahm Ponti eine grosse Anzahl unbekannter romantischer Klavierkonzerte, zumeist in Weltersteinspielungen, sowie das Solo-Gesamtwerk mehrerer Komponisten, unter anderem Skrjabin, Rachmaninoff und Tschaikowski, auf. Seine v. a. aus dieser Zeit stammende Diskografie umfasst daher mehr als 80 Platten. (*) Im Jahr 2000 erlitt Ponti einen Schlaganfall, wodurch er seine rechte Hand nicht mehr benutzen konnte.

He won many accolades and prizes for his work, including First Prize at the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in 1964. He made over 80 recordings. He gave performances in the world's great concert venues including Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and Teatro Colon and with the world's leading orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic. He performed with conductors such as Solti, Masur, Kondrashin and Sawallisch. He founded and recorded with the Ponti-Zymansky-Polasek trio which performed all over Europe. Together with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau he recorded the fiendishly difficult Charles Ives Lieder.

The myriad recordings he made for the Vox Turnabout label in the 1960s and '70s of forgotten romantic piano concertos were a revelation to a whole generation of collectors, works that had often not been dusted off for a century and more but which sparkled into new life in the hands of this amazing musician, making you wonder why they were never played in today's concert halls.

His huge output of 80 records includes complete piano recordings of both Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. He was also known for recording – and bringing to light – a number of concertos that had never been recorded before. These included works by Mily Balakirev, Clara Schumann, Ignaz Moscheles, Charles-Valentin Alkan, Sigismond Thalberg, Moritz Moszkowski and Hans Bronsart von Schellendorff.

Der Konzertpianist Michael Ponti ist tot. Der international renommierte Musiker starb am Montag im Alter von 84 Jahren in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, wie sein Sohn Maximilian Ponti der Nachrichtenagentur dpa bestätigte.

Ponti war für seine Interpretation von Werken von Sergei Rachmaninow und Peter Tschaikowsky bekannt. Einen Namen machte er sich insbesondere auch mit zahlreichen Ersteinspielungen unbekannterer Komponisten. Ponti nahm mehr als 80 Platten auf.
