09.11.2022 Der am 14. Oktober 1946 in Dunfermline geborene schottische Rock-Sänger und Texter William Daniel "Dan" McCafferty (Bild) ist am 8. November 2022 gestorben. Er war Gründungsmitglied der Hard-Rock-Band Nazareth. "Mit seiner rauen, heiseren und bisweilen kreischenden 'Reibeisenstimme', die mit fortschreitendem Alter zunehmend bizarr wurde, seinem eigentümlichen Gesangsstil und seiner charismatischen Bühnenpräsenz sicherte sich McCafferty nicht nur einen festen Platz in der Rock-Historie, sondern er wurde auch zum Vorbild für zahlreiche andere Sänger." (*) Nazareth feierten die grössten Erfolge Mitte der 1970er-Jahre: Ausgedehnte Welttourneen mit Konzerten in ausverkauften Stadien und an renommierten Festivals sowie regelmässige TV-Auftritte führten die Hard-Rock-Band um den gesamten Globus. McCafferty wirkte auf insgesamt 23 Studioalben sowie diversen Live-Produktionen und Kompilationen mit.

Scots Nazareth lead singer Dan McCafferty dies age 76

The Scots singer's death was confirmed by his friend and Nazareth bassist Pete Agnew in a heartwrenching social media post.

He wrote on the band's Facebook page on Tuesday: "Dan died at 12:40 today.

This is the saddest announcement I ever had to make. Maryann and the family have lost a wonderful loving husband and father, I have lost my best friend, and the world has lost one of the greatest singers who ever lived.

Too upset to say anything more at this time."

Dan McCafferty, one of the founding members of Scottish hard rock group Nazareth, has died at the age of 76

Born in Dunfermline, the star was known for his raspy vocals on 70s rock classics such as Broken Down Angel, Hair Of The Dog and Love Hurts.

He remained with the band until 2014, when he developed a lung condition that made it hard to breathe and was forced to retire.

McCafferty was the singer for Nazareth from their formation in 1968 through to 2013, when the band announced his retirement from touring due to health issues. He appeared on all of Nazareth’s albums up to 2014, beginning with 1971’s self-titled effort, and toured with the group for 45 years.

Dan McCafferty kam am 14. Oktober 1946 im schottischen Dunfermline zur Welt, dort gründete er 1966 die erste Band, The Shadettes, die vor allem Coverversionen spielte. Nach zwei Jahren kam Gitarrist Manny Charlton hinzu, man nahm mehr Eigenkompositionen ins Set und änderte den Bandnamen in Nazareth.

1971 erschien das erste Album von Nazareth, aber der kommerzielle Durchbruch kam mit "Razamanaz". Ihre größten Hits feierte die Band mit Rock-Balladen. Die Coverversion von "Love Hurts" wurde mit einer Goldenen Schallplatte ausgezeichnet. Auch der letzte große Singlehit der Gruppe, "Dream On" von 1982, war wieder eine Ballade, diesmal aber eine selbstgeschriebene.
