November 1946 in Kingston geborene jamaikanische Bassist, Gitarrist, Keyboarder, Background-Sänger, Co-Songwriter, Arrangeur, Bandleader, Tonmeister und Produzent Aston Francis "Family Man" ("Fams") Barrett (Bild) ist am 3. Februar 2024 in Miami (Florida) gestorben. Er gilt als ein Repräsentant von Early Reggae und Roots-Reggae. Er war zunächst bei den Hippy Boys und dann bei Lee Perrys Studio-Band The Upsetters. Aston Barrett wurde der musikalische Kopf von Bob Marleys Begleitband The Wailers, in der er zusammen mit seinem Bruder Carlton von 1970 bis zu Marleys Tod im Jahre 1981 spielte. Der "Family Man" war u.a. auch für Bunny Wailer, Burning Spar, Peter Tosh und John Denver tätig. "Die Trommel ist der Herzschlag und der Bass ist das Rückgrat", sagte Barrett einmal. “With the heaviest of hearts, we share the news of the passing of our beloved Aston ‘Familyman’ Barrett after a long medical battle,” Barrett Jr wrote on his official Instagram page. “This morning, the world lost not just an iconic musician and the backbone of The Wailers but a remarkable human being whose legacy is as immense as his talent. Our family is asking for privacy during this challenging time, as words cannot express our profound loss.”

The legendary bassist played for reggae icons Bob Marley and the Wailers, Burning Spear and Augustus Pablo.

Reggae Musician Aston "Family Man" Barrett Has Died At Age 77

The Jamaican musician and Rastafarian born on November 22, 1946 is a prominent figure in reggae, he played bass guitar, guitar, keyboards, and percussion instruments. Barrett, part of the Barrett brothers who played with Bob Marley & The Wailers, was the bandleader, co-producer, and responsible for overall song arrangements.

His character is played by his son Aston Jr. in the “Bob Marley: One Love” Movie set for released February 14.
