04.09.2022 Der am 24. September 1959 in London geborene britische Sänger, Schlagzeuger und Tonträgerproduzent Angus "Drummie Zeb" Gaye (Bildmitte) ist am 2. September 2022 gestorben. Er war der Leadsänger und Drummer der international bekannten britischen Reggae-Band Aswad. Grosse Erfolge feierte diese mit den Titeln "Don’t Turn Around" (Nr. 1 in den britischen Charts), "Give a Little Love", "Shine" und "Beauty’s Only Skin Deep". Ihr politisches und soziales Engagement, z. B. in Form von Benefiz-Auftritten und -Aktionen für Katastrophen-Opfer, behinderte Kinder und gegen Rassismus oder auch Drogen, behielt die Band kompromisslos bei. Aswad trat 1988 neben vielen Weltstars beim Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert im Wembley-Stadion in London auf, dem Solidaritätskonzert für den inhaftierten südafrikanischen Politiker Nelson Mandela.

Drummie Zeb, lead singer of UK reggae band Aswad, dies aged 62

Musician Angus “Drummie Zeb” Gaye, the lead vocalist and drummer for the British reggae band Aswad, has died aged 62, according to a statement.

“It is with deepest regret and profound loss that we have to announce the passing of our brother Angus ‘Drummie’ Gaye,” the band said. “Drummie has left us to join our ancestors and leaves a huge void both personally and professionally.”

Aswad, the trio of Angus Gaye, Brinsley Forde and Tony Robinson, were the first reggae band in the UK signed to an international label, Island Records, in the 1970s, and swiftly became a classic British reggae act creating 15 albums in two decades.

They were part of a rebellious British reggae movement that included bands like Steel Pulse and Misty In Roots and dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson

Aswad started as a hardcore roots-reggae act with songs like Three Babylon and Not Satisfied. Drummie Zeb’s passionate playing on the 1982 in-concert album, Live And Direct, won him widespread acclaim.

As the band’s sound and image became more commercial, he assumed most of the lead vocal duties on songs like the global 1988 hit, Don’t Turn Around as well as Give A LIttle Love and I Need Your Love.

Als Sänger der Gruppe brachte Zeb mit Songs wie „Don't Turn Around“ oder „Shine“ Reggae-Rhythmen in die Charts, auch in Deutschland. Der ehemalige Sänger der Band UB40, Ali Campbell, würdigte Zeb als britischen Reggae-Pioneer.
