10.12.2021 Der am 7. Februar 1960 in Glasgow geborene britische Keyboarder, Sänger und Komponist Steve Bronski (Bild) ist im Dezember 2021 gestorben. Zusammen mit dem Leadsänger Jimmy Somerville und dem Sänger und Perkussionisten Larry Steinbachek bildete er in den 1980er-Jahren die Synthie-Pop- und New-Wave-Gruppe Bronski Beat, die bereits mit ihrer Debutsingle "Smalltown Boy" Platz drei der UK Top 40 und damit grossen kommerziellen Erfolg erreichte. Alle Mitglieder des Trios bekannten sich offen zum Schwulsein, was sich auch in ihren Liedern widerspiegelte, die oft politische Kommentare zu Themen der Homosexualität enthielten.

Sad to hear Steve Bronski has died. He was a talented and a very melodic man. Working with him on songs and the one song that changed our lives and touched so many other lives, was a fun and exciting time. Thanks for the melody Steve.

The electronic trio were also known for raising awareness about gay rights. "Smalltown Boy" was about the anguish of growing up homosexual, and the sleeve for their debut album "The Age of Consent" listed the ages of consent for gay men in different countries.
