12.02.2022 Der am 25. Juni 1946 in London geborene britische Songwriter, Multiinstrumentalist und Musikproduzent Ian McDonald (Bild) ist am 9. Februar 2022 in New York City gestorben. Er war Gründungsmitglied der britischen Progressive-Rock-Band King Crimson (mit dem einflussreichen Debutalbum "In the Court of the Crimson King") und der Rockband Foreigner (mit Hits wie "Cold as Ice" und "Feels Like the First Time"). Sein vielfältiges Talent umfasste Spielweisen von der Klassik über die Tanzmusik bis hin zum Rock’n’Roll.

Reflecting a few years ago on a music career as a founding member of two major bands — King Crimson and Foreigner — as well as collaborator with many others, Ian McDonald was quietly pleased with his lot. “I have trouble processing time in terms of years and weeks and months,” he told Billboard. “I mean, it’s 40 years for Foreigner, almost 50 years for King Crimson — but it feels like milliseconds.

McDonald first came to renown as an original member of King Crimson, which was founded in January 1969. By July of that year, the band appeared with the Rolling Stones in a concert in Hyde Park, and released its debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King, that October. The album only went to No. 28 on the Billboard chart, but it was later hailed as a prog-rock landmark. The opening track, "21st Century Schizoid Man," featured McDonald blazing on his saxophone.
