Jack Tramiel ist gestorben

10.04.2012 Der Mann hinter dem legendären Heimcomputer C64 ist tot: Der 1928 in Łódź geborene Jack Tramiel (Bild) starb am Ostersonntag im kalifornischen Monte Sereno. Der Computervisionär hatte als Gründer des Unternehmens Commodore und früherer Chef von Atari einen entscheidenden Anteil daran, dass der PC in das Alltagsleben einzog (und damit letztlich auch den Weg für das nun allgegenwärtige Internet ebnete).

A name once uttered in the same vein as Steve Jobs is today, his journey from concentration camp survivor to captain of industry is the stuff of legends," says Martin Goldberg, a writer working on a book about the Atari brand and the early days of video games and computing with Atari Museum founder Curt Vendel.

"His legacy are the generations upon generations of computer scientists, engineers, and gamers who had their first exposure to high technology because of his affordable computers - ‘for the masses and not the classes.'"

"Tramiel was born in Lodz, Poland, in 1928 to a Jewish family. He survived the Auschwitz concentration camp, after which he emigrated to the U.S. in 1947.

Tramiel claimed that after surviving the Holocaust he could survive just about anything. The Auschwitz survivor undoubtedly survived the computer industry, including being ousted as chief executive officer (CEO) of the company he established."
