22.04.2024 Der am 28. März 1942 in Boston (Massachusetts) geborene US-amerikanische Philosoph Daniel Dennett (Bild) ist am 19. April 2024 in Portland (Maine) gestorben. Er galt als einer der führenden Vertreter eines entschiedenen Naturalismus' in der sogenannten Philosophie des Geistes. Dennett war Professor für Philosophie und Direktor des Zentrums für Kognitionswissenschaft an der Tufts University (bei Boston). (*) Er hat zahlreiche Bücher publiziert.

Famously describing the idea of evolution by natural selection as "the single best idea anyone has ever had," Dennett devoted his book Darwin's Dangerous Idea to trying to "get thinkers in other disciplines to take evolutionary theory seriously, to show them how they have been underestimating it, and to show them why they have been listening to the wrong sirens." His provocative and lively presentation was applauded and criticized in equal measure, with a chapter attacking Stephen Jay Gould's popular writings on evolution particularly exciting controversy.

Daniel Dennett, who has died aged 82, was a controversial philosopher whose writing on consciousness, artificial intelligence, cognitive science and evolutionary psychology helped shift Anglo-American philosophy from its focus on language and concepts towards a coalition with science.
His naturalistic account of consciousness, purged as far as possible of first-person agency and qualitative experience, has been popular outside academia and hotly opposed by many within it.

Il a ainsi affirmé que la religion n’est qu’une illusion, que le libre arbitre est une chimère et que seule la sélection naturelle permet d’expliquer l’évolution.

Er halte Gott nicht für eine besonders gute Idee, hat Daniel Dennett einmal gesagt. Wer an Gott glaube, könne genauso gut an Elfen, Kobolde und Feen glauben.
