Library Science Talk September 28/29 2009

15.09.2009 The Swiss National Library, CERN and AILIS invite you to the September Library Science Talk. The talk will take place on Monday 28th September at 15.30 in Geneva at ILO and on Tuesday 29th September at 15.30 in Bern at the Swiss National Library.

For the talk in Geneva at the International Labour Organization (ILO), external guests should go to the ILO Library on floor R2 (South). The talk will take place in the Library Meeting Room and the library staff at the Information Desk will direct you to the room. Please register beforehand by contacting kristine.clara@itu.int

For the talk in Bern at the Swiss National Library, external guests should be at Hallwylstrasse 15 at 15.30. For further information and a map, you may contact Ms. Genevieve Clavel at genevieve.clavel@nb.admin.ch or by telephone at 031 322 89 36.

The speaker is:

She will present:
Integrating Information Resources

Abstract:
Today, enormous amounts of data are available on the web. Libraries and scholarly information platforms, which play an important role in establishing an e-science infrastructure, are facing the daunting problem of providing orientation in this data deluge in order to offer scholars easy access to information and supply them with efficient tools for selecting, filtering, ranking and reusing information. This talk will view some facets of the complex task of integrating heterogeneous information resources and will outline some strategies to tackle this challenge mainly from the perspective of discipline-specific community-based information systems.

Bio:
Since obtaining her PhD in theoretical particle physics at Hamburg University in 1982 she has worked for the DESY Library and Documentation, mainly being involved with the SPIRES HEP literature database and in recent years with Open Access. In August 2009 she has moved to the Open Access section of the CERN Library.

The talk will be given in English in Geneva and in German in Bern.
